Introduction:
Linux (commonly pronounced/ˈlɪnʌks/, LI-nuks in English, also pronounced/ˈlɪnʊks/, LI-nooks) is a generic term referring to Unix-like computer operating systems based on the Linux kernel. Their development is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration; typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed, both commercially and non-commercially, by anyone under licenses such as the GNU GPL.

Linux is predominantly known for its use in servers, although can be installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from embedded devices, mobile phones and even some watches to mainframes and supercomputers. Linux distributions, installed on both desktop and laptop computers, have become increasingly commonplace in recent years, partly owing to the popular Ubuntu distribution and the emergence of netbooks.

The name “Linux” comes from the Linux kernel, originally written in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. The rest of the system usually comprises components such as the Apache HTTP Server, the X Window System, the GNOME and KDE desktop environments, and utilities and libraries from the GNU Project (announced in 1983 by Richard Stallman). Commonly-used applications with desktop Linux systems include the Mozilla Firefox web-browser and the OpenOffice.org office application suite. The GNU contribution is the basis for the Free Software Foundation’s preferred name GNU/Linux.

Course Highlights:
This is a 2 days comprehensive hands-on course package to introduce user on the essential knowledge to understand and administer GNU/Linux System for other Windows based PC. From Installation until managing system such as managing packages, managing files, users using both Command Line Interface (CLI) and Graphic User Interface (GUI). It is very suitable for people who are used to using other GUI based operating system (OS).

This hands-on course is designed for beginner and intermediate users. It is especially useful for those who wish to understand & gain essential knowledge on the fundamental of system administration of GNU/Linux system, IT managers, engineers, researchers, and scientists.

6. Create, Monitor, and Kill Processes
7. File systems Concepts in GNU/Linux
8. Manage File Ownership
9. Use File Permissions to Control Access to Files
10. Use of X-Window (KDE or GNOME)
11. Server based Package/Software installation such as Apache, FTP and SSH.

Training Schedule:
Day 1:
Morning Session

• Talk on What is Free/Open Source Software
• Installation of GNU/Linux System

Afternoon Session

• Getting use to X-Windows and commonly-used packages/softwares

Day 2:

Morning Session

• System management using GUI and Command Line Interface (CLI)

Afternoon Session

• Demonstration on how to use and configure server such as HTTP, FTP and SSH

Instructor’s Biodata:
He obtained B. Eng (Hons) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Glasgow University in 1994. He continued his M.Sc study in Optical Electronic Engineering at University of Strathclyde and graduated in 1995. He then continue his study at PhD level at the same university and completed in 2000. His research interests are in computer and telecommunication network modelling using discrete event simulators (OMNeT++) and embedded system based on GNU/Linux for vision and smart system. He has five (5) years teaching experience in Universiti Sains Malaysia and six (6) years in Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). He has more than 10 years of experience using GNU/Linux system for research, and teaching.

1. Training conducted at UniMAP: RM800/pax.
2. Training conducted at an organization (in house training): RM1000/pax (minimum of 10 pax) cost include USB Thumbdrive and Training Material.
3. Training conducted at an organization (in house training) for participant les than 10 person: RM4200 in Honorarium + 2 night of Accommodation & Travel.
